Food prices surge in Moscow

Moscow -- Prices have risen dramatically on practically all food products in Moscow.

As reported by the Russian capital's food resources department, the average wholesale potato price stood at RUB 12 (approx. USD 0.38) per kilo as of January 1, 2009, up from RUB 8.5 (approx. USD 0.27) in early October, while white cabbage cost RUB 8.2 (approx. USD 0.26), up from RUB 6.3 (approx. USD 0.20) as of October 1, carrots prices increased from RUB 12.2 (approx. USD 0.39) to RUB 13.1 (approx. USD 0.42), beef appreciated from RUB 111 (approx. USD 3.52) to RUB 121.1 (approx. USD 3.84), and chicken prices rose from RUB 70.3 (approx. USD 2.23) to RUB 72.5 (approx. USD 2.30).

Cooking oil saw a slight decrease in value from RUB 57.4 (approx. USD 1.82) to RUB 56.8 (approx. USD 1.80), while the prices of sugar, butter, and cheese remained virtually unchanged, at RUB 19.2 (approx. USD 0.61), RUB 108.9 (approx. USD 3.45), and RUB 180 (approx. USD 5.70), respectively.
